Candle Care

A good candle is half the scent and half how you burn it. A few habits make every Nestuary candle throw stronger and last longer.

The first burn matters most

Let the wax melt all the way to the edges before you blow it out. That usually takes two to three hours. Wax has a memory, and a short first burn leaves a tunnel down the middle that it will follow every time after.

Every time you light it

  • Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before each burn. A short wick burns cleaner, with less smoke and less soot on the tin.
  • Burn for no more than four hours at a time. After that the wick can grow too long and the flame too high.
  • Keep it out of drafts. Open windows, fans, and vents make the flame flicker and smoke.
  • Set it on a heat safe surface. The tin gets hot while it burns, so handle it only once it has cooled.

Safety, always

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Keep it away from children, pets, and anything that can catch fire.
  • Stop burning when about 1/2 inch of wax is left in the tin.
  • Put it out with a snuffer or by dipping the wick into the melted wax, then straighten the wick. This keeps smoke out of the room.

When it's finished

Once the tin is empty, pop it in the freezer for an hour and the last bit of wax will lift out cleanly. Wash it with warm soapy water and it's ready for matches, rings, or the next Nestuary candle you can't stop thinking about.
